Now it's on to this one, with similarly high hopes:

Summer of women authors progress so far: clinical depression and deteriorating vision make reading very difficult for me, but so far I've finished these three novels, and not one of them less than a 4.5 out of 5*!

Last book finished: "Black Sun" by @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social
Currently reading: "Death of the Author" by @nnedi.bsky.social
On deck: "The Incandescent" by @emilytesh.net

You know what, let's go for this: making it a year of women authors.

Reading has been very difficult for me for a couple of years because of severe depression and anxiety (partially caused by US/UK and world politics), but making good progress in this, my first experience reading @nnedi.bsky.social and liking it a lot. Hoping not to be too devastated by the ending!

I've been a fan of Judge Dredd since the beginning of 2000AD. It's gone from a SF action strip to one of the most complex and intelligent satires in the medium, walking an extremely deft line in that the "hero" of the comic is the ultimate symbol of exactly what the comic is critiquing.

I'm certain that Los Bros Hernandez's "Love and Rockets" is the greatest comic ever created. The poignancy of seeing such beautifully realized characters age at the same time you do is staggering. Love and Rockets reminds me of being young and frequently leaves me awash in tears.

Favourite author: J. G. Ballard. I love his beautiful and precise prose and intellectual preoccupations. A chapter from his "The Unlimited Dream Company" was a reading at my wedding. I presented a paper about him at an academic conference.

I truly adore pigeons. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter in New York (mainly cats) and every now and then someone would bring in an injured pigeon. I would rehab them. One turned into a pet and was incredibly sweet. Pigeons are very affectionate. Pheap liked to bath in the cat's water bowls.

"Flanders" by Patricia Anthony. If I were forced to pick one favourite novel, I think this would be it. Beautiful, moving novel about dreams, ghosts, and WWI, by a criminally under-recognized author.

We lived in New York on 9/11/2001. We knew people in the twin towers. Like many, I developed PTSD. Every touring artist cancelled their NY shows that fall - except Björk. After much discussion, we went. And cried, and started to believe again that maybe goodness was possible. I'll always love Björk.

Athol Fugard, the brilliant South African playwright who died just a few months ago - having (quite unfairly, in my view) never won the Nobel prize for literature. I'm not sure how many of his plays I've seen performed. I've loved them all, but "Master Harold..." will always be the one I love most.

York minster, the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen. Much of York is pretty special, but whenever I visit, all I really want to do is stand outside the cathedral and gaze up at it. Stunning on the inside, as well - especially the Seven Sisters stained glass windows.

Ethiopian cuisine. My favourite cuisine in the world! I used to be able to get this a lot in New York. When we moved to Edinburgh, I had to learn to cook it for myself! Now, after 20 years, we finally have an Ethiopian restaurant, Muna's, in Edinburgh! My favourite dish is gored gored.

Arthur C. Danto, American philosopher, long time art critic for The Nation. I took his introductory philosophy class at Columbia University and was blown away. I read many of his books of criticism and the philosophy of art. We became friends when I was living in New York.

I did not realize there was a tree the name of which so aptly explained why the world is going to hell.
