I feel like that may be influenced by the recent shift toward trope-forward marketing. The pressure to play up trendy elements leads to marketing that promises "decadent cheesy goodness!" and it turns out the cheese is a sprinkle of parmesan on top when the reader expected fondue.

Respectfully, I don't think that's about writers being prideful as much as the fact that most of us don't have the funds to pay a professional editor.
