Looking forward to being at the GovAI Summit (Oct 27-29, Arlington VA) on behalf of Coginiti!
If you’ll be around, stop by our booth and let’s connect in person. And if you’re not at the conference but you'd like to grab a coffee (or whiskey🥃) while I’m in town, send me a message and lets meet up.

Great turnout for our Low-Key data meetup in Raleigh last night. Wonderful catching up with so many regulars and meeting the new people that showed up! Lots of great conversations about people, processes, careers, and the personal highlight for me... meeting someone building ml for chicken sexing!

Spent a few days offline communing with nature and contemplating another trip around the sun. Didn’t spend a minute thinking about data, sql, open table formats, snow vs dbrx, etc. Regular nonsense will commence tomorrow after I’ve deleted all these emails.

@thedanicafine.bsky.social went deep on considerations for integrating Apache Kafka to Apache Iceberg, especially the tradeoffs using Spark, Flink, or Kafka Connect.

Fantastic turn out for our inaugural NC Apache Iceberg community meetup! Anchored by a trio of great talks from Danica Fine, Matt Topol, and Lester Martin. It's always great to get to hang out with super smart people in the open source data community! #databs

You’re excited about AI models, but I’m excited about this new artist series Grande fly reel from Redington. We’re not the same!

Thing I'm most excited about today. Picked up this Redington "Bonefish" Grande limited artist series for a new 9wt setup.

Here is an Ardbeg you can put on you hunt list, but you might have to hit a duty free to grab it. I had to Google Manzanilla too :) It's type of sherry

Still part of the OpenAI model underclass. I guess this GPT-5 rollout is taking a minute.

We've been hosting these low-key data meetups for about two years now. Always delightful mix of data practitioners of every stripe, software engineers, and startup founders. Last night I chatted with a research physicist, a student just launching her career, and a guy working on G-Meet.

I've carried a pocket knife daily since high school, almost always a Spyderco like the one on the left. It's such a habit that when I don't have one clipped to my pocket I feel like I'm missing something. When I travel I clip a Lamy Safari pen in my pocket to fill the spot as a placebo.

Had a fun time talking about building AI agents for data and some of the pitfalls that come along with building these agents. Some good questions and really great follow-up conversations from a fantastic audience.

I've started a new project this year. Reading authors local to North Carolina who write about people and place. In part this is to give me more of a sense for my new home. (It's not that foreign when you're from KY) Lately reading through David Joy's excellent novels. Next up Taylor Brown & Ron Rash

The last month I've seen a number of hit pieces about Apache Iceberg from database guys that seem really upset about the rise of open table formats. Puzzling since major investment in Iceberg is coming from every major database from DB2 to Snowflake.

Excited for the release of Coginiti 25.6 today!
Lots of enhancements across the whole product including new chart types (still no dashboards!), AI Assistant adds the ability to search the web, and our new linter panel enables you to see and fix issues across an entire project. Quick demo!
