My understanding is that the Attention phase is where the students complete an interpretive task for a text that contains multiple (underlined) examples of the targeted structure. After demonstrating comprehension, they're ready to co-construct the rule.

...ends on p. 88...

It looks like I definitely have a different edition, because my chapter 4 ends on p. 8 and I'm noticing your references to pages in the 90's.

I feel like I must be losing my mind since neither you nor Denise have this. I'm attaching a photo in hopes of restoring my sanity.🤣

Hmmm, I just double-checked and it seems to be 62-63 in my book.

Presentation + Practice is not the most effective way for teaching language structures. #SLAyyy

I think I do a pretty good job using input processing (PACE model) to introduce new structures. #SLAyyy

p. 63 (Table starts on p. 62)

Some of the Principles of Input Processing in Table 4.1 were new to me, especially the ones in the last row (Event Probability, Lexical Semantics and Contextual Constraints). The examples were great. In spite of being a native speaker, I was unable comprehend the last example on my first reading.

I need to include more Structured Input activities! The enriched input and enhanced input activities I've been incorporating are not enough! #SLAyyy #LangChat

Even though I'm a hugh proponent of authentic resources, I was surprised to learn that research showed that students found them easier. I'd love to know more about the studies! #SLAyyy

In Box 3.6, the authors suggested scaffolding a text message creative task by providing one character's responses. (I've always had the students write both parts.) I think doing so would allow me to guide the students in including more content from the original text. #SLAyyy

I learned/relearned certain details about the Interactive Model. For example, including 2 parts in the Comprehension Phase seems really important, and something I have sometimes failed to do. #SLAyyy

I have been relying on authentic resources when designing lessons/units/curriculum for several years. I thought the authors did a great job supporting the use of these materials.

I ordered it after I saw your convo. I've only read the first chapter so far Can I post comments as I catch up?

Awww. I'm so honored!

I'm on Grandma duty tonight, but I'll look forward to learning from you after the chat.

Oh, no! Thanks for a great chat! #Langchat

Absolutely! It was the specific projects described in the book that I don't think would have ever worked for me or my students. We certainly did create present projects using parameters that allowed me to assess and provide feedback on their language use.

I 100% agree with you!

Spoiler alert: The students researched a sustainability topic, collaborated with group members, and eventually presented their final project to a public audience. That seems a lot to ask of a student who might not be consistently speaking in complete sentences.

I definitely wonder how students at the Novice High/Intermediate Low proficiency level were able to complete the tasks in the 2nd project in the chapter. #LangChat

Thank you! I would LOVE to see one of your projects! Could you share any examples? My email is lisashepardwlc@gmail.com if that's a better way to share.
