Long story: doi.org/10.1093/nar/.... Shorter story: nucleic acid 🧬👩‍🔬chemistry (a flexible glycerol linker) resulted in modular synthesis of DNA probes with the quencher closer to the fluorophore, allowing ~single molecule detection of viral RNA by qPCR amplification & excellent multiplexing capacity!
Fluorogenic oligonucleotide cleavage probes with a branched linker improve RNA detection
Abstract. Fluorescent probe-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is essential for DNA/RNA quantification widely used in research and clinica

After an amazing effort to help with lack of qPCR test materials, @crbsmcgill.bsky.social got together & delivered 15,000 COVID tests to the hospital. #throwback reporter.mcgill.ca/15000-covid-... Then, the nucleic acid chemists began working on improving qPCR detection.
