Assuming you can quantify impact of a player’s resentment at being underpaid upon their performance, this would create an arbitrage opportunity in the market for Supermax eligible players, because they will be more valuable for teams that cannot offer them the Supermax.

The 2017 Supermax contract rules weren’t updated in the 2023 CBA that introduced the second apron. That means that there is now an advantage for teams to trade away their Supermax eligible stars.

If I’m Luka, I don’t care that much about the small difference in the number of millions per year, but I would care a lot about knowing that my current employer is willing to pay me the most that they are permitted to under league rules.
