MLS, USMNT, USWNT, USL, & the whole of American soccer. The type of sicko who can actually explain the MLS budget & roster rules.
At least there’s no moto-cross scheduled!

Tonight’s Nations League semi vs Panama is a big game for Pochettino & the USMNT & I really can’t complain about this lineup. Especially pumped to see a healthy Josh Sargent in the lineup again….finally.

I really wish these guys would do even a tiny bit of research before writing clickbait about MLS.

Over 220 players earned more than the max budget charge last year.

2. This is especially true every year when you compare transfer market spending by Liga MX CCC participants, and MLS participants. Here's a breakdown of spending by Liga MX and MLS CCC teams over the last two windows:

With the Philadelphia Union's record signing of Bruno Damiani, MLS teams have now set 19 transfer records over the last two windows.

It's MLS so I don't really feel great about these picks, but here are my 2025 predictions for posterity:
February 18, 2025 at 5:22 PM
With a couple months left in the primary transfer window, MLS has already surpassed its largest transfer outlay in both a single season & window & for the first time the average MLS team's transfer spend has exceeded $10M. That's 5X+ more than it was 10 yrs ago (20 teams) & 2X+ 5 yrs ago (27 teams).

These kit rankings are always fun. Here are a mine. Flame away.

Holy crap, the a-holes @ the NASL are taking credit for equal pay & the formation of the Super League.

MLS teams would also kill for this type of production out of a $4M DP forward. Goals & chance creation are the most expensive attributes & the Dynamo & Sporting KC just got players who have proven, in MLS, they have those attributes. Great buys.

McGlynn may not fit what the Union are trying to do, but any MLS team would kill for this type of production out of a $2M U22 signing.

@sportico.bsky.social is out with their updated MLS valuations. The rise in valuations is impressive, but I focused in on team revenues & the numbers are impressive. Some highlights:

Total Revenue = $2.225B
Best Revenue = $190M
Avg Revenue = $77M
Med Revenue = $69M
Bottom Revenue = $45M

Great stuff from @tutul.bsky.social. I still expect MLS to have a negative transfer balance when it's all said and done, but there's no question this is a very positive development. Here's MLS's total transfer revenue by year. The league has already exceeded its previous high by 75M Euros.

Excellent piece from @manuelveth.bsky.social. This quote from Harrell stood out to me:

Antonee Robinson w/ a MotM performance against Liverpool. Brilliant 2 way performance & with 2 more assists he’s now matched his career high for assists in a season after just 16 games. #USMNT

@paultenorio.bsky.social reporting that the #MLS board of governors meeting came & went & MLS EVP Nelson Rodriguez says MLS will continue to “explore” changes.

Cool, cool, cool….. so nothing.

@paultenorio.bsky.social w/ a great piece on where the MLS/Apple stands 2 yrs in. No one covers this stuff better than Tenorio. That Apple's Eddy Cue sat in on Comp Committee meeting stood out to me. That's very positive IMO. Will it result in real change? We'll see.

Great article. Really informative. I would note that while South America is still a crucial market for many MLS teams, purchases have shifted markedly toward Europe in the last couple years both Prime Age DPs and U22s.

A lot of the talk around this trade has been about Arena doing Arena things, but it also aligns w/ a clear trend I've picked up on. The devaluation of #MLS players in intraleague transfers. Since 2022 allocation $ spent in such moves has declined a 79%, while interleague transfers have risen 48%.

🧵 Per a few requests, I broke down MLS's interleague transfer spend a little further by year & region & included some add'l info where MLS teams are buying TAM, U22, & DPs from. Found some interesting stuff:

We all know MLS teams spend more on offense and, frankly, that's true of every league. A number 9 just costs more than the weird dude between the pipes. How much more are MLS teams spending on attackers vs defenders?

...A LOT.
