LTG Hertling was my commander when I was on the USAREUR staff. Good man. Good thoughts. He mentions some friends of mine.

Here are some of my own reflections after 26+ years of active military chaplaincy.

The church of the Book of Acts was catholic, charismatic, and cruciform.

God's glory is cruciform.
God's sovereignty is cruciform.
God's victory over sin, death, and the devil is cruciform.
God's ultimate power in this age is cruciform.

Again I saw all the oppressions that are practiced under the sun. Look, the tears of the oppressed—with no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power—with no one to comfort them. (Ecclesiastes 4:1 NRSVue)

Hi, contemporary hymn writers. You know, there are more attributes of God than good and beautiful. Better yet, use verbs. Tell the biblical story of what God did, is doing, and will do. That's how we know God is good.

The character of God is in the story of God. Use more biblical allusions.

Now is a good time to pray the Great Litany.

“That it may please thee to make wars to cease in all the world; to give to all nations unity, peace, and concord; and to bestow freedom upon all peoples

The Ten Commandments don't belong on public school walls for religious and civic reasons. I have spotted them above the altar in Episcopal churches, where during Lent we prayed them one by one, "Lord have mercy, and incline our hearts to keep these laws."

Heard in today's sermon on Luke 8:26 (The Gerasene Demoniac). The church of Jesus should be a place of healing, communal and personal restoration, and liberation from the evils that afflict us.

Amen.

There is no “one and done” in any conflict.

The opponent always gets a vote, and unless we’ve prepped for all the things Iran may do we’re gonna have some surprises.

Army audiences ought to jeer the name of Robert E. Lee and all the rebel West Pointers reflexively. Every time his name is spoken, everyone should boo loudly. It should be as much a part of Army culture as jeering Haman on Purim or trampling down death in the Easter Vigil is in religious contexts.

Is there any theological justification for setting the equitable (minimum) salary for #UMC ministers in full connection higher than that for full-time associate members or full-time local pastors?
