“Which one would you rather go to?” Ruth asked.
Rei poked at his food. “I don’t think I have a choice.”
Edward frowned. “What do you mean?”
“SU offered me a scholarship to be on the swim team. I was planning to walk on but this means it’s for real, right from the start.”

Rei sighed. “Well, you’ll be happy. I didn’t get into any of the Cali schools.”
Ruth & Edward exchanged a quick smile, then caught themselves.
“But,” Rei added, “I did get into Michigan & Syracuse.”
“That’s great, Buddy!” Edward beamed. His father had gone to Michigan.

Still, Rei couldn’t make peace with it. He wasn’t ready. The hurt was too raw. That night at dinner, Rei decided to broach the subject. He took his usual seat as his mother set down one of her prized chicken recipes.
“So. We know you got your acceptance letters. Tell us."

One of the coolest things about creating this world, is that I've been able to work with my brother as the illustrator!

Special shoutout to Bruce Brachman for the incredible artwork and bringing this world to life. #Booksky #sciencefiction #scifi

On the 4th day, his inbox pinged incessantly. It was good news, bad news. The California schools had passed. But the University of Michigan and Syracuse said yes. Syracuse sweetened the offer with a nearly full swimming scholarship. Fate seemed to be nudging him toward it.

The memory of those weeks felt like a film scorched by overheated lamps. The calming hum of the house’s air filters filled the silence, a faint buzz that echoed the static in Rei’s chest. Every memory of Windy’s laugh felt like a sharp shard, lodged too deep to pull out.

Rei arrived home from LA a broken young man. It wasn’t permanent but it was fresh. When his parents asked about the trip, he shrugged it off. “It was… OK.” No matter how much they probed, that's all he offered. He spent a few days alone in his room, staring at the ceiling.

Before we travel to South America, I thought I'd give you a peek at what the book looks like in full print, rather than little snippets at a time. Tomorrow, we'll head south. I promise!

That first week with Windy, full of light and laughter, had been one of the happiest of his life, no matter the disaster that followed. The joy of that week was something he would carry with him into the unknown.

This is the end of the Windys chapter. Next up, S. America

She signed it, “Love, Windy.”
Rei held the letter close, feeling the weight of her words settle inside him. It was a quiet farewell but one that echoed across the stars he was about to reach. He smiled faintly. That first week with Windy, full of light and laughter, was...

After that, Rei only heard from her once more, just before he began his Ark II training. A final envelope arrived. Powder blue. Perfumed. Familiar.
Inside, Windy had written: “I read the announcement. Ark II. You, Tau Ceti, wow! I always knew you’d reach for the stars..."

She bubbled over with tales of boys she met, her excitement about junior college, stories that made Rei cringe. But he couldn’t be cruel to her.
A year before Rei left, Windy admitted the truth. She’d been too overwhelmed to tether herself to one boy on the East coast.

The blue envelopes returned, not as often, not with the same weight. Windy’s tone was sweet, anecdotal, affectionate, but softened in a way Rei noted right away. These were letters from a friend to a friend. He didn’t have the heart to tell her they could never be friends.

All Stevie did was exist but Windy reached for him anyway. Rei didn’t blame Windy. He didn’t blame Stevie. But he couldn’t find a version of himself untouched by either. His friendship with Stevie was irretrievably broken but sadly, Rei never got the chance to reconcile.

... about architecture pods and how nice Windy’s parents were. Rei nodded, never mentioning the spiral he’d just lived through. Stevie didn’t even know what he’d done, which somehow made it worse. If he’d made a move, tried to steal her away, maybe Rei could’ve hated him.

The next morning was busy, packing, quick steps, almost no words. When the robo-taxi pulled up, farewells were exchanged and Windy hugged him. She whispered, “I’ll write.” And for some tragic, twisted reason, Rei believed her. On the flight home, Stevie chattered on...

The story he’d written in his head was already being overwritten, & he wasn’t the one holding the pen. He retrieved one of Windy’s letters; the word “love” now seemed a placeholder. When they returned, he pretended to be asleep, grateful for a brief respite from his grief.

Stevie was in but the pit in Rei’s stomach turned into a full-blown ache. He told Windy that he couldn’t go. She just shrugged & said “Suit yourself.” It sounded light, but it landed like a closing door. Rei watched them leave, replaying the kiss, the change in her voice.

During a lull, she pulled up her scroll & showed Stevie a vid from a party last year. Rei saw her hand resting lightly on Stevie’s knee. It made Rei feel sick. Still, he said nothing. Windy had planned to take Rei and Stevie to a concert at the refurbished Hollywood Bowl.

Rei asked for 1 picture of just him and Windy, but she said they’d run out of time & would get it next time. Windy spent more time talking to Stevie & less with Rei. The Phillies were in town playing the Dodgers. At the game, she sat between them but leaned toward Stevie.
