So, when my mom cries in defeat, I know how real the fear is. She's not just tired of fighting. She's scared for the people she loves. She's scared for the people they love. And she's scared because everyday, I'm witnessing more & more pieces of what life was before the Civil Rights Movement.

She spends a lot of money on others - animal saving nonprofits, local community aid nonprofits, church ministries, & specific people. My dad would like her to stop doing that for their own financial safety, but he knows her heart & would never ask her to do it (just monitors money closely).

She's been fighting mental health stigma for decades, being the child of a woman who died by suicide.
She's been the first person that many college students felt safe to come out to. She recognized her privilege. She made sure that I did too, a fights for others to receive the same.

My mom cries easily, but it takes a lot for her to feel defeated. She's 71 years old. She was raised in a small town in GA. She started fighting racism at 5 years old when her mom explained that n***** was a derogatory term and could hurt her custodian friend at school.
