At Trinity last night for book launch of 300 years of Trinity. Launched by Peter Boyle (who turned to history when he retired - role model ❤️); met up with JMK; and a talk from Peter Morris on history of chemistry lab.

For Trinity Chemistry alumni (and interested others) Book launch of "Trinity College Dublin - 300 years of Chemistry" in Dublin on 30th June with a talk from Peter Morris on the history of the chemistry laboratory. What's not to love?!

Had a great day yesterday at #CLEAR25 symposium - really excellent talks. Loved hearing about @burrowscer.bsky.social phenomenongraphy work describing student perspectives in project-based labs, and Jianye Wei on inquiry in Chinese context. I've added my slides here: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/guac2...

Looks like they’ve already tried it on the physicists and forgot to change this. Generally am suspicious of anything based on Switzerland!

In a parallel universe this is the conference that I could be attending 😭 When people say they don’t know what they’d do if they won the lottery, I do! I know what I’d do…!

An interesting report on earnings of PhD students in the years after graduation. Weekly median earnings for degree, masters,PhD (not shown, my electrician). Also fascinating to see age profile of PhD students in Ireland and how this differs by subject. Sources…

Such a *bizarre* article on “the last Irish lords” being abolished with Starmer’s“ram through” of reform. TLDR: a few (4?) hereditary peers who also happen to have legacy Irish titles are being booted out. I think Earl of Cork sums up extent of impact #FullOfSmiles www.irishtimes.com/life-style/p...

Somehow it is 11 years since I published this book. It was a labour of love. Need to get my local history mojo back up and running!

Normally I am quite sane (yes!) but the one thing that makes me scream and cry is historical reenactments in documentaries. If you say Charles I wanted to support his son, I believe it. I don’t need to see a dodgily acted ‘scene’ (with mummy in background grabbing her jewels)… please make it stoppp

This book is absolutely amazing. Everything carries so much meaning with hindsight. The second chapter is immediate post war period and shares the observations of real anger among Germans at their humiliation by French and English as a result of Versailles. A chilling line from c.1920:
