State Representative for Michigan’s 22nd District (Plymouth, Northville, and Livonia)
I’ve proven over my 3+ terms that I will vote for a good school aid bill regardless of what party sponsors it. This budget is not it. They say budgets mirror your values & priorities, this budget prioritizes smoke & mirrors & political games over student, safety, and achievement.

In the House, we took up HJR-B, the Michigan version of the federal SAVE Act. This legislation could prevent tens of thousands of legal Michigan voters their ability to register to vote. The measure required a 2/3 majority yes votes and was defeated because House Dems stood strong and voted no.

Yesterday, I spent some time at Silver Springs Elementary in Northville with three fifth grade classes teaching how a bill becomes a law. I used Michigan’s “Hands-free” law of 2023 to give them a real life example. The kids asked great questions and I had a wonderful time.

Today, I alongside my colleagues, @ranjeevpuri.bsky.social and Reggie Miller, joined thousands of Western Wayne residents who showed up in a big way in Canton to make their voices heard. We lined the sidewalk along Canton Center and streets across the country to tell Donald Trump, #handsoff

Thank you to Secretary of State @jocelynbenson.bsky.social for joining us at the Plymouth Library to listen to and discuss the concerns of Michigan residents regarding the SAVE Act at the federal level as well as HJR-B currently in the Michigan House.

Yesterday, every single Michigan House Republican voted to cut $5,147,387.40 from the education budget and to defund higher education.

But they don’t want you talking about that. That’s why they want you to focus on this.

Every Michigan House Republican just voted to defund our schools by over $5 billion.

We know because the right-wing think tank, Heritage Center keeps a database…and their data shows 68 cases of non-citizen voting dating back over 40 years.

The question stands, how many thousands of Michiganders should lose their right to vote to make the GOP whole?

My explanation of my opposition to HJR-B: a resolution to require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. This destructive measure would absolutely create barriers to vote for legal voters and I will be voting no, both in committee, and on the House floor.

At last night’s State of the State, I welcomed Northville City Councilman John Carter and his wife, Liz Carter as my guests on the House floor.

We started our morning at Winchester Elementary in Northville to present our Teacher of the Month award to Emily Eckley. Ms. Eckley was nominated by one of her students because she is so helpful and always helps her students do their best! 🧵1/2

Today, we reflect on and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

House Democrats were in the minority for 12 years and as a caucus we showed up to work through the end, no matter how much we disagreed with what was being voted on. Republicans have been the minority for 2 and just went home.

Yesterday, Plymouth City Commissioner Nick Moroz and I had the opportunity to talk with Daisy Scouts from Isbister Elementary about what we do as elected officials. The girls asked great questions!

Today was one of my favorite annual traditions. Every year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I am a guest in Ms. Bennett’s AP Government classes at Plymouth High School. Today, I spoke to six classes. The students asked really thoughtful questions about my job as a legislator. It was a great day!

In 2023, we enshrined Affordable Care Act protections into our state law. This means that no matter what happens at the Federal level, in Michigan, essential benefits, those with preexisting conditions, and young people until the age of 26 on their parents’ insurance will be covered.

One of the public acts of this term that I’m most proud to see is Michigan’s hands-free law. By banning cell phone use while driving, we’ve seen accidents reduced and lives saved. Big thank you to my friend, @marimanoogian.bsky.social for her work on this and so glad this got across the finish line.

Last week, my bill, HB 4849, known as “Queenie’s Law,” passed the House Agriculture committee. We are one step closer to ending needless, painful experiments on dogs at Michigan’s public institutions.
