I get this - I don't really understand what it's meant to achieve. Internet Explorer was the default thing for everyone and it fell away because people realised it was bad and Chrome wasn't. Even if the company gets spun off, surely it would still be mostly integrated with everything anyway?

Yeah there's definitely something in losing the reflex. It feels strange to talk about it as something you almost have to retrain yourself in, but I guess I'd rather do it here than on X
