Halloween Marathon Day 18: The Ghoul (1933). A former lost film recovered in a lost Cinema vault in the UK. While not as thrilling or story driven as other contemporary horror films, the character acting really saves this film. The Ghoul is full of quotable lines and memorable performances.

Halloween Marathon Day 17: In a Violent Nature (2024). The over the shoulder tracking perspective trained on the killer makes this a very unique and fresh entry into the slasher genre. The story feels secondary to the unique cinematography but I really enjoyed it regardless!

Halloween Marathon Day 16: the Man Who Laughs (1928). I have so many glowing this things to say about this treasure but a horror film it is not. Gothic epic romance probably fits it best but no one enjoys arguments about genre. We are privileged that this story made in the Silent film era...

Halloween Marathon Day 15: Phantasm (1979). A cult classic that should be more widely known outside horror fans. It's unique story, practical effects, and loveable characters bring me back to this movie every Autumn. I saw it at PhilaMOCA for the first time on the big screen!

Halloween Marathon Day 14: The Invisible Man (1933). Claude Rains is both funny and terrifying as the titular charcter. He may also be the deadliest of all universal monster villains in that in the film he kills over 100 people by causing a train disaster. Take that Dracula!

Halloween Marathon Day 13: Gacy: Serial Killer Next Door (2024). The first movie of the marathon I actively disliked. Not only is the acting poor, not only is Gacy especially cringey, the story isn't what happened in real life. Cannot recommend this one even for sheer curiosity sake.

Halloween Marathon Day 12: Another double feature with Weapons (2025) and House of the Long Shadows (1983). A sensational pairing of a modern horror sensation and a star studded haunted house mystery. The former is everything the genre is becoming and the latter an exemplar of the grandeur it was!

Halloween Marathon Day 11: Burnt Offerings (1976). While normally such a star studded cast, beautiful setting, and interesting climax would ensure success this one falls flat for me. The second act of the movie slogs a little too much and the scares are mild.

Halloween Marathon Day 9: Caveat (2020). While sometimes the plot can become a bit convoluted, this modern entry into the genre is an instant classic. It is a masterclass in horror technique and Damien McCarthy continues to demonstrate his keen sense for the unnerving and eerie.

Halloween Marathon Day 7: Uzumaki (2000). A beautifully shot but ultimately poor adaptation of an incredible horror manga from the legendary Junji Ito. Many scenes which could ratchet tension ultimately end cartoonishly when translated to the screen.

Halloween Marathon Day 6: The Last Broadcast (1998). Really fascinating Found Footage that debuted a year before the Blair Witch Project. Poorer quality than BWP for sure but a lot of interesting ideas seem to inspire it in turn.

Just off my Gilgamesh and assyriology kick and now getting back into translations of Beowulf 😎

Halloween Marathon Day 5: The Bat (1959). Agnes Moorehead as Ms Cordelia the mystery novelist is one of my favorite characters of the era, I wish there were more movies with her!

Halloween Marathon Day 4: Campfire Tales (1997). Kind of like if Are You Afraid of the Dark and Urban Legend became an anthology story movie. A lot of celebs as young kids in this!

Halloween Marathon Day 3: Slumber Party Massacre (1982). Another cult 80s slasher. Very interesting in that it: 1) hits so many tropes of slasher violence, 2) shows the killer very early who's just a regular looking dude and 3) plays heavily in the theme of growing up.

Halloween Marathon Day 2: Terror Train (1980). Another early horror with Jamie Lee Curtis except a more complicated plot, and leas dramatic kills. I love the vibes of this one, but some strange storytelling decisions make it less memorable than other Slashers of the era.

Halloween Marathon Day 1: Chopping Mall (1986). I've always wanted to see this! I remember the VHS in blockbuster as a kid and never got a chance to check it out. Fantastically corny and nostalgic in a classic 80s way
