A really good writing teacher told me to take every reference of specific modern things (wifi, pop-culture, brands of any sort) out of my writing to make my stories feel more timeless, and I think about it every time I read a book that mentions musicians or TV shows by name

Unless you are writing in a historical setting, don't use the word 'whilst' outside of dialogue. While works just as well and doesn't sound pretentious
