lol man if i had a nickel for every dude (it's always a dude) in my film history classes who completely misunderstand the point of Fight Club... yeah, media literacy is a problem.

but ya know art is messy. i mean how many blues/ country/pop/rock songs are about drinking drugs violence and murder?

for sure there was def a type of dude who romanticized him, lot of overlap w/ Burroughs whole junky trip. i found the incredibly bleak way Burroughs & Bukowski wrote about drugs & alcohol was not romantic at all. and the sexism, even in the 90s when i read this stuff, was ultimately a big turn off

lol i don't know if too many folks hold him up as a "model artist" anymore--your "take" has certainly been the norm for at least 20 years.
that being said i think Ham on Rye and some of his poetry still hold up. And Schroeder's Barfly is imo an underrated 80s cult classic.
