A photo from my archives of our last Snowy Owl irruption of 2012. We haven't had a big irruption since, which is probably for the best. I'm afraid of the impacts on these birds if we were to have another one now.

This is a fancy, diurnal, clear-winged moth sipping liquid from a leaf. Moths in this family often resemble stinging insects, but this species didn't get the memo. It went for jungle air-shrimp instead. #Inverts #MothMonday

swallowtail and chokecherry / colored pencil on 14x17 Duralar / 2023

Here we have a swallowtail butterfly (Papilio multicaudata) throughout multiple stages of its life - egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and imago - perched on a branch of its host plant, the chokecherry tree (Prunus virginiana)!

It seems that one of my hobbies is never leaving this Fiery-throated Hummingbird painting alone. Just when I think it’s done I get another wacky idea to make it better.

That’s ok, hobbies are supposed to fun right?

“Through the clover meadow”
A flock of sparrows runs through a meadow of clover. Among them flew a sparrow ridden by KOKEDAMACHAN. KOKEDAMAHCHAN and his friends are happily playing with their forest friends today.

Whales are well known for using echolocation, and in modern times, humans have developed sonar technology which functions using similar principles. Continued in comments…

One more for the Year of the Snake, plus #TBT. It's one of my favorite photos I've ever taken, from ten years ago in Borneo, a gorgeous little snake called an eight-striped kukri (Oligodon octolineatus). I have a large print of it on my home office wall and it makes me happy to see every day. 🐙 📷 🐍

A White-browed Coucal looking particularly awesome! This species is often shy, preferring to be deep in vegetation.

“A voice echoing in the sea”
The sea turtle suddenly heard a strange voice in the sea. It was the first time he had ever heard such a voice, but it was nostalgic and resonated directly within his heart.

There are TAGERI in the neighboring fields. They walk on the soil plowed by the tiller, looking for insects in the soil. It is a beautiful bird whose wings glow seven colors in the sunlight.
