You have not given it a chance. Start on Shostakovich ( I know - not exactly contemporary) but also try Bartok, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, David Diamond, Max Richter, Gorecki, Ligetti ( used in 2001 Space Odyssey), Messiaen, Adams.

Most of my students like to code in red on black. Unfortunately, my eyes can't differentiate the letters from the background. I let my students know that if I can't read it, I can't grade it. Usually does the trick.

Whenever I see this sort of thing ( or eat at an upscale restaurant - once a year) I am always reminded of the scene in Doctor Zhivago when marchers in the street singing the Internationale and Komarovsky says " No doubt they'll sing in tune after the revolution."
