Discussing Olaudah Equiano's 'Interesting Narrative' today in our 'London Global' module seminar and am reminded of this sculpture by Christy Symington at the Queen's House in Greenwich, where he's flanked by naval officers, the Greenwich meridian in the background

Very happy to see this now in print, 'Salome's Bookshelf: Artists and Writers of the 1890s', ed. Simon Reynolds, with my own chapter 'The Music of the Venusberg: Richard Wagner and the poetry of Arthur Symons' #RichardWagner #Decadence #ArthurSymons

Day three since this happened and I still feel, look, and sound like someone ran over my neck several times. Very grateful for the NHS but hey, next time, more morphine! I could have done with several days of being completely off my face! 🤪 If anyone has laudanum please send it my way

The only way this vase might represent Wuthering Heights would be to smash it and then roll up and down on the fragments, screaming 'Heathcliff!' and gurgling gibberish as you go.

Apparently Elizabeth R has booked my table from 6.30, so I'm wondering which ghost is going to turn up. Glenda Jackson or one of the monarchs?

#MarcelProust sees me yet again. 'and when people who...' The reason why, as an exhausted lecturer, I have yet more books delivered (much to my husband's annoyance). The modern world right there, amazon deliveries, doomscrolling, etc. From 'The Way by Swann's' #ALaRechercheDuTempsPerdu #Literature

Finally my first edition of the #CharlesDickens weekly serial 'Great Expectations' is complete, having finally found volume IV to add to my volume V of 'All the Year Round'. 'O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'

It's very difficult indeed to read about the murder of my former colleague and friend, Jamal Khashoggi, as I start this just published book, Unholy Kingdom by Malise Ruthven. He is much missed. @versobooks.bsky.social #JamalKhashoggi

Academic pay rates should take this into consideration too. Silas Wegg says that to read poetry aloud to Mr Boffin of an evening will command higher rates. Maybe I should petition for a poetry increment #CharlesDickens from 'Our Mutual Friend'.

Very happy about putting together a lecture on the #CharlesDickens short story 'The Signal-man' (1866). Have never lectured on Dickens before, so I'm dizzy with excitement.

Sad to be leaving this world soon. Another astonishing read, beautifully, profoundly moving, at times very upsetting. A novel that takes no prisoners (in more ways than one) demands you wake up, but rewards richly, deeply, endlessly... #TheMirrorandtheLight #HilaryMantel

A little exhibition I've installed in the Mile End Library @qmul.ac.uk called 'Global Victorians'. I'm not sure Dickens would be happy stuck at the back, peering over Dinah Craik's head, but tough luck Charley... @c19qmul.bsky.social #Victorian #nineteenthcentury #CharlesDickens #Emilybronte
