It wasn’t just a sheltering for me. It was a casual cultural belief that poc were less intelligent, wasteful, “not understanding” of the way things are “supposed to be.”
I remember reading in school how Columbus & his ilk “civilized the natives.” Just. Wow.

As a white woman I had no idea how ugly the USA has always been to any poc. I am revolted by this. And so very sorry for my sisters and brothers who’ve always known.
