They were specially fattened on nuts in special earthenware jars. Stuff the dormice with minced pork and the minced meat of other dormice. The stuffing was pounded with pepper, pine-kernels, asafoetida and liquamen. When sewn up the dormice were placed on a tile and cooked in the oven (furnus), or else in a small portable oven (clibanus), which was made of earthen-ware, iron and bronze. Asafoetida was a plant resin with a bitter taste and a strong smell of garlic.
