In 2006, a study was done where judges' sentence lengths were influenced by numbers they heard outside of the courtroom beforehand. This is part of the anchoring effect.

If you’re trying to pick up a new skill, and you just aren’t getting it, ask yourself: when was the last time you ate? Or slept? Or took a walk? When the brain is tired, it will conserve energy by refusing to do things like learn.

The only time you should ever use a trick question in your assessment is if the learner needs to pick up the skill of answering a trick question. Otherwise, let’s not intentionally communicate poorly and the punish a learner for not getting it.
