While fragmentary, frescos show decorated hulls & prows with things on them: actual objects, or just symbolic images?
Close-up of ship fresco from West House, Akrotiri, the hull has black spirals on a blue background, and on the prow there is a moth/butterfly and a flower. Dolphins are shown in the sea around the ship. People in textile garments are shown sitting in the ship beneath a sail that is not hoisted. Detail of another ship prow which seems to show a bird, possibly a swallow, and perhaps a flower. The rear of another ship is visible, also decorated. Detail of rear and hull of a ship, which is clearly decorated, perhaps by felines. You can also see the ikria, a little cabin made of cattle hide, highly decorated, presumably where the 'captain' or another VIP sat, and decorations strung out from it towards the mast. More dolphins in the sea. Detail of the only ship shown with sail out; the hull is white with a repeating pattern of blue birds (dove?) on it. Presumably painted. This ship seems smaller than some ofthe others with fewer people and a different set-up below the mast, maybe cargo.
