There were any number of versions of those, many with captions showing those in power saying things like ‘we rule you,’ ‘we deceive you,’ and just below the armies ‘we shoot at you.’ And below that the social elites dining at a huge table balanced on the backs of the working poor. Powerful stuff.

Agreed, on all counts. Back when I was actually teaching, my 8th grade read the novel, and then we’d watch this film. Despite the black and white and slower pacing, they were rapt!

I don’t know… something about the youth and eagerness in those voices is really vital to the punch. Bit yes, both are excellent. If I recall correctly, that film also pioneered the ‘track shot,’ with the longest single unedited shot to date or for quite some time after.

All Quiet on the Western Front (1920-ish) is wonderful, and a rather good rendition of the novel.

I understand his sentiments, but that’s the point of that fiasco; to make it u tenable for anyone who might stand up to them. If all the ethical leaders leave, then the military will be an utterly unchecked force for the fascist whims of this administration.
