⚡️⚡️⚡️Precisely. Presidential pardons are a remedy of last resort, in rare cases when the legal system has malfunctioned. The fact that Trump imagines that he’s been given a stack of Monopoly Get out of Jail Free cards to sell or bestow for profit or gratification, or political points, is grotesque.

Illinois State Police. They’re under the jurisdiction (at least in theory) of Governor Pritzker, who on one hand has been outspoken in defending Chicago against the ICE occupation, but on the other, doesn’t seem to be doing anything about the ISP aiding and abetting the same.

Certainly, in the moment we fight like hell however we can. But we can’t be fighting for a return to business as usual.

If we are going to make our way through to the other side of this mess, we have to know the contours of the pathway that brought us here.

This is not a “both sides are the same” post. Republicans used the demonization and criminalization of ‘foreigners’ as a key signpost in their Long March towards fascism; Democrats simply muttered among themselves, consulted their pollsters, and quietly wished the issue would simply Go Away.
