Holmes County has USA’s highest homicide mortality and is one of 10 Mississippi counties with a homicide mortality rate higher than DC’s. In 2022, citizens begged Judge Lee to make Lexington ask Tate Reeves for help, but the city objected—Judge Lee denied the request, so no one came.

I mean we’ve got 10 counties with homicide mortality rates higher than DC, and what we’re doing about it is (a) clogging the system with low-level detainees by failing to fund public defense and (b) emptying out poor PDs by hiring officers into wealthier agencies with less serious crimes to work.

It would have been better if the PD had spent its time focusing on serious, not-made-up offenses like murders, though that’s less lucrative than ticketing.

Definitely way too much of that. The Lexington PD doesn’t report their data, so mine’s from a CDC system that reports data compiled from death certificates.
