Introducing an animal, particularly the pet of a villain will show a side of a character that the reader may not otherwise see.

I believe many writers feel impelled to write and there is no need to question it any further than that.

For me, the most important thing in a short story is by the end the character should have changed in some way.

Multiple POV can be interesting. I prefer narrative in 3rd person with occasional panning into the character's head for a 1st person POV.
