I leaped forward, a move I had never known myself capable of, and then I was kneeling in wet sand, carefully lifting his head, mindful of his hair, cradling him in my lap so that I could bring my ear closer to his mouth. He did not react, nor did he show any sign of pain. The part of me yelling that I was too late, that I'd failed him, that I'd screwed up, again, threatened to overcome me when I heard it again. It was the faintest intake of breath, almost cut off by blood. He was choking, but he wasn't dead. Not completely.

Work in progress fic snippet : "Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess." "Of course she would, gods forbid he should marry a commoner, asshole!" Ed snickers. Stede looks at him from above his glasses. "You're gonna comment on everything, aren't you?" Ed tries to look sheepish "hum, yeah, probably" Stede's hand comes to brush a strand of hair away from Ed's face, fingertips trailing against his forehead softly. Ed's breath catches in his throat. "Well, OK then." He whispers, in a tone Ed has trouble deciphering. If he had to take a guess, he would say Stede looked.. fond? His eyes go back to the book. "He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones." "Yeah, real ones are hard to find" mumbles Ed. He doesn't expect an answer, and almost doesn't hear Stede's. "So hard." Work in progress, art for fix. Ed eyes closed, resting against a pillow, sleeping.
