If the movie is like the others where it happens over 2-3 nights, it's believable that Mark would be deep undercover and away from home. The writers & Radio Silence have talked about being HUGE Scream fans they chose Mark. Either Spyglass or Kevin Williamson made this dumb decision.

He's probably still LAPD or in law enforcement, he could have been undercover during the events of the movie!
