Some books I recommend that are written as a collection of short stories include Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and Drown by Junot Diaz

Stories that I’m NOT allowed to teach include The Box Social by James Reaney (short but with an ending that will hit you like a brick wall) and Guts by Chuck Palahniuk (seriously, a teacher was suspended for letting his kids read it, it is not for the faint of heart)
