My house has 1890's door knobs with mortise. The spindles may come in different sizes. Do you have your broken spindle to match? I've found salvage replacements at Building Resources on Amador St in SF. For new parts Center Hardware on 3rd St. Or a good locksmith, wish I had one to recommend.
