My comment on BlueSky's idiotic proposed banning of fictional C/NC content and art.

I actually have a lot more to say about it, but considering this past week*, this is pretty much the extent of my patience for this kind of censorship idiocy right now.
I've had my intimate images posted on BlueSky without my consent multiple times now with the express purpose to harass me after I was doxxed as a sex worker. I couldn't get BlueSky to take the accounts down. That's actual sexual abuse and a crime happening in real time, and BlueSky did nothing about it. It literally happened to me again last night, and to my knowledge, BlueSky has done nothing about it, despite countless reports from me and my followers on my accounts. I would prefer it if BlueSky invest resources into stopping actual crimes from occurring on its platform than come up with idiotic policies that will probably do the most harm to survivors themselves. What's next? We can't talk about our real experiences of sexual assault just in case someone decides it's too graphic for them?

Think back to your high school sex education classes (assuming you had any). If they were anything like mine, they were limited to images of putrefying genitals — blighted with some or other sexually transmitted illness — and birth control (“Be wise, condomise!”). If you were very lucky, your sex ed classes may have included some form of slut-shaming, particularly directed at girls. (“Watch how much you drink; only have sex with some- one you love; don’t wear promiscuous clothes; don’t sleep around; don’t pay too much attention to men; don’t laugh, breathe, exist too loudly.”) Most discussions of sex and sexuality are marred by a lens of morality — a list of “do’s and don’ts” that do not adequately equip teens (or adults) for the actual politics and complexity of sexuality and sexual interactions. Or, worse, a moral-panic approach that tries to control sexuality, particularly that of teenage girls and women. Sex is much more than a “do’s and don’ts” list. It a relational activity and, in an inequitable world with regard to sex and gender, it is also a never-ending negotiation of power. It is therefore complex, making the kind of prescriptive black-and-white thinking taught in most schools dogmatic and unhelpful in real life situations. The simple fact that morality is often used to abuse power and oppress those it considers “deviant” makes it incompatible with a truly equitable negotiation of power in sex. Ethics, however, provide us with more nuanced and useful tools on how to negotiate power structures in sexual intimacy that help to benefit and amplify safety, empowerment and pleasure for ourselves and our sexual partners. French philosopher Michel Foucault suggests that, to be sexually ethical, we must be mindful of not only our own desires but also the effect of those desires on our partners, through a constant renegotiation with ourselves and others. Discussions of sexual ethics and the ethics of pleasure have gained traction over the past decade. (The fact that these are not reflected in sex ed classes speaks to the lasting effect of moralistic and patriarchal discourses attached to sexuality.) The importance of consent has been the focal point of many sexual ethics education and campaigns outside the school cotext. “Enthusiastic consent”, when “only yes means yes”, is an example of such a campaign, and has taken root in anything from vanilla, heterosexual relations to a wide variety of kink communities. As I wrote for Playboy in 2013, enthusiastic consent is less of “Can I give you a golden shower?” and more of “What would you like me to do to you?” It’s the perfect opportunity to whip out those sexual fantasies you have kept hidden away in the darker recesses of your imagination. Finally, you can tell your partner about your affinity for some light whipping, and also hear about their geeky Star Trek role-play fantasy. (I prefer World of Warcraft, myself.) To further Foucault’s concept of sexually ethical, enthusiastic consent is respect for your sexual partners’ bodily autonomy as well as your own. “No” means “no”, but the absence of a “no” does not mean “yes.” A “maybe” is not a challenge to keep trying until your sexual partner gives in to your persistence — it’s an indication that your partner isn’t a-okay with what- ever you are asking. Comments like “I don’t know” and “if you want me to” are also signs that your partner isn’t really that into it. And who wants a partner who isn’t ready to bang your brains out at the very suggestion? This is particularly relevant in heterosexual pairings, which are overloaded with inequitable patriarchal discourses about men’s and women’s sexual behaviour and interactions. By explicitly asking a sexual partner what they agree to and how, you are not only respecting their boundaries but also your own. The acronym BDSM is as multifaceted as the community itself: its letter pairings stand for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. BDSM takes the inevitable negotiation of power in sex and turns it into power play. But as power also has the potential to be misused or abused, it is by necessity that the BDSM community has not only embraced the language of sexual ethics but also mandates it, even as a tool to push the limits in their sexual explorations. The community’s guiding ethical mantra is “safe, sane and consensual” at all times. This is crucial to maintain the distinction between what is pleasurably painful, and what is merely pain. Learning about and employing a language and framework of sexual ethics is crucial to ensuring equitable, mutually pleasurable sexual intimacy for you and your partners. And, let’s face it, wouldn’t you rather discuss sexual ethics and the ethics of pleasure in a sex ed class than witness yet another slide of putrefying genitals? I would.

The people harassing me are SO useless at verifying anything that they have now accused me of: > Not creating queer content, when I've posted 11 audios with queer tags since April and last year wrote fanfic starring queer OCs > Accuse me of "doctoring my voice and pictures" when there's news footage of me on YouTube going back a decade, before GenAl was invented. It really is laughably pathetic how absurd this has become. I've redacted the names for my privacy and that of the individuals mentioned, but I felt the point worth sharing.
It is deeply troubling how quickly the good character, hard work, and meaningful contributions of people can be undermined on social media. Too often, little effort is made to check the facts or consider the validity of the claims before vicious attacks gain traction. Some people rush to join the spectacle, adding their voices without regard for the harm caused. Some are able to keep their heads, but others seem to enjoy joining an online mob. These attacks may burn out as quickly as they begin, but the impact on those unfairly targeted lingers far longer. Sometimes there is permanent damage. At other times the recovery is slow, painful, and often a profoundly lonely experience. It is also worth recognising that it is often, though not always, Black women who find themselves most viciously under attack. That is why I am heartened to see that in the case of the remarkable [redacted] the clearly ludicrous accusations have not gained any traction. Even so, it is unfortunate and unnecessary that she should have to endure such an ordeal at all. We need to do a lot more to develop an ethic of how to use social media, and that must include exercising much, much greater care when confronted with unevidenced attacks.

OK. So first emotion. Shocked. Second emotion. Unconditional kindness and support. I can only imagine how violating and confusing this must feel. Please know, before anything else, that you deserve nothing but kindness and care. Mish, you have always been unapologetically authentic — fabulously and fantastically yourself. Your voice, whether in your advocacy against gender-based violence or through your work in online spaces, has consistently shown courage and integrity. That authenticity, and the way you stand so firmly in who you are, is what makes you special and so deeply valued. Being doxxed for defending the vulnerable is flipping horrible - not once but twice, but it does not reduce you to your digital content. Who you are cannot be defined by how others share or misuse what you create. You are more than the labels. You are the one who chose your path, and that agency matters. Then wracking my brain. There may be limited legal remedies depending on where you live — in Europe, for example, there is the “Right to be Forgotten” under GDPR, though it does not always extend to content being maliciously spread. I know the FPB amendments regulated the spread of revenge porn, but I am not sure what happens when the disseminators are outside local jurisdictions and are unknown. Online is just a mess when it comes to the abuse of your personal content and likeness (which I think is why the Denmark are now automatically copyrighting all their citizens likenesses) What matters most is remembering that you are not the harm being done to you: your worth is defined by your choices, your advocacy, and your integrity. I think you have done the right thing. Now you control your story. Nothing about us, without us. Sterkte. I am so sorry this has happened (and is still happening!) to you, Mish. You are an epic human being who has shown so much strength and character through the years. Only love and support for you. Don’t let the bastards grind you down. (Easy to say, hard to do - I know xx)

Sigh, I've been thinking very hard about whether I should post this here, but I really don't think I have a choice, so here we go. Part of the reason why I've been absent for the last two years is because I've been the victim of a long, drawn out and absolutely f*cking exhausting online harassment campaign (yes, again). It started on Twitter, but not at my professional account you all know as @mishsolomon. It started in fandom spaces, which was supposed to be my escape and reprieve from stress and everything you all know I've already been through. But just as before, it started because I stood up for and defended a fellow rape survivor. I'm not going to go into the full details here. It's been 18+ months of this now, and I'm exhausted. But the part I need to tell you is that, as part of this ongoing harassment and abuse, I was doxxed as an online sex worker. I know many of you are going to find it abhorrent that I would do such work. I have my reasons, and at this point I have no interest in explaining myself. It's my body and my choice, and this is work I've chosen to do and love doing. I was doing it anonymously, but then I was doxxed in March this year. My abusers have already made a 'revenge porn' account on BlueSky to harass me, where they non-consensually reposted my intimate images to mock my body and tag my professional BlueSky account, @mishsolomon.com, where many of you were following me. I've deactivated that account now as a result of this abuse. Since I was doxxed, there's no point in trying to hide the work that I do, and in fact I've found trying to hide it only empowers my abusers and allows them to terrorise me more. I'm tired of living in fear waiting for the moment South Africans find out about this, and being terrified it makes headlines in shitty RW publications like PoliticsWeb (which already happened 11 years ago, as some of you will remember). It is what it is. I'm not ashamed of what I do. But I am going to ask that you respect my privacy when it comes to this work, and do not investigate or engage with me on those accounts where I do this work. This is especially important to me if you are a member of my family or under the age of 18. This work is not for you, and if I had a choice, it would never be something I'd be forced to share with all of you. Now you know. A picture of Mish with the text "Should I merge my two identities? Please help!" So, some of you know that I was doxxed earlier this year. This has meant that I no longer have any real semblance of privacy, as well as long list of negative consequences. But one of the few benefits of this happening is that I can be my full self wherever I go. I don't have to hide the fact that I'm a journalist and an activist, or the issues that matter most to me. But despite that, I've tried to manage the situation, my comfort and my fears by having a separate account for my journalism and activism to my SinMadeManifest accounts, where I do my audio er💋tica work. (Those who follow me on BlueSky are aware of this, where my main account is mishadventure.blog.) But increasingly I have to ask myself whether this works for me and works for my followers on my separate accounts. Should I keep these identities separate, or is it time that I finally merge them, since my anonymity is just an illusion anyway?
