Most of my research happens during the writing on a "by the way" basis. I never realise exactly how much I've done until afterwards when I begin to put together my notes, because this way you barely feel it.

Because it costs you nothing to keep this around even if you rarely look in; and when things get better (as they invariably do) it'll be easier to already have this waiting on the back burner than to start again from scratch.

And old railway guides, if you write historical! Half my research seems to be about train schedules and how long it would take to get from A to B.
