On the sink sits a cup Hubert had bought for him quite some time ago upon the realization that Ferdinand cupped his hands for water to rinse his mouth with after brushing his teeth. He doesn’t always use it, but he likes to leave it out. It’s nice to be reminded that he’s cared for.

Ferdinand does not knock before he enters Hubert’s bedroom. He sweeps in with only a fraction of his usual bluster, but no less fury, and drops himself on the matterss with equal ire. “I need a half an hour of your time. Maybe more,” he huffs. “Today was bad, Hubert. What happened at Arianrhod –” He pauses, fingers hovering over the laces of his boot, then shakes his head forcefully, as if to knock loose the carnage from where it clings to his memory. “Never mind. Come to bed.” Grimacing, Hubert weighs his words carefully. “A travesty,” he agrees. He rolls his quill between his fingers, delaying his reply until Ferdinand, halfway through loosening his laces, looks up at him in irritation. “Come to bed,” Ferdinand repeats, honeyed eyes boring into him. Hubert feels like an insect trapped in amber. His throat is tight; his guts roil in his chest. “I must decline,” he manages. “You cannot,” Ferdinand says, plaintive and angry with desperation, slamming his foot back down onto the flagstone. “Not tonight.” “I’m afraid I have to.”

There is nothing so cruel as one’s own desire. It’s a sentiment Hubert feels acutely while laying next to Ferdinand, even as he knows how far it is from the truth. How small one man’s desire is when compared to the centuries of manipulation by The Immaculate One, the viscious experiments performed by the Agarthans on child after child, the many tortures meted out by his own hand. No, desire is no cruelty. Not really. But with Ferdinand mere inches away, hair cascading down the sweat-sheened musculature of his back, the hard lines of the truth lose their form. Emotion finds the gaps and wriggles in, corrupting Hubert’s objectivity in favor of this ache, deep, deep in the marrow of his bones, crying out for more. They have been doing this for months. If Hubert reached out his hand – if he took a lock of soft copper between his fingers, just to let it slip between them – would Ferdinand allow it? Would he forgive it? Slowly, Hubert reaches out, knobbly hand extended. It would not quell his miserable greed, but – they have been doing this for months. By some self-preservational instinct, Ferdinand’s head whips towards him, and suddenly Hubert’s fingers are mere seconds away from instead cupping a cheek like the lover he isn’t. He stares at Hubert. Hubert stares back. They breathe, and then they break. “What,” Ferdinand intones darkly, “do you think you’re doing?” Hubert will not look for excuses. He cannot make an admission. “My apologies,” he says, and withdraws his hand. Something passes across Ferdinand’s face – an emotion that Hubert doesn’t recognize. It is not disgust, which he knows. Nor is it desire, which he knows it cannot be. “We are done for tonight,” Ferdinand informs him, head snapping back forward. When Hubert does not move, he says, “Get out of my bed.” Wordlessly, Hubert does.
