This has been in the works since 2023--alas.

This is pretty good--but more an ideal than reality many places?

Used to do a whole course pairing Austen with those she read or who read her (add Radcliffe; Charlotte Lennox; did Fenwick's Secresy once; Parson's Wolfenbach once):

this is just lovely and powerful--having taught and loved teaching that novel for years and watched it change with different groups of students--this is a wonderful refresh.

I think they are out to kill the whole university system that aims to make higher ed an option and access point for a wider population. Back to only the sons of gentlemen (aka wealth governors and their ilk) go to university--the rest of us might be some trade school w/o history.

So assuming this is finally a real criticism of her work? So much of it is so disingenuous, in bad faith, and oversimplifying others positions--but it's captured folks I respect.

Exactly-and "indirect" goes to basic infrastructure & department budget-- by lifting those departments' budgets depending on your budget model, it supports the whole university. This impacts beyond the sciences & direct health fields--so humanities, arts, and physical plant will be impacted too.

Yes--this will have massive repercussions across universities for humanities, social sciences, and arts which are indirectly supported by those funds. NEH and NEA which also pay indirect at a negotiated rate aren't the big dog here, but this will really hurt Hum & Arts too.

Another thought: which direction is the metamorphosis going--into woman or into cat?--works differently (esp depending on which end of the beast you consider--reads to me like woman into cat because of tending to privilege the head, but then again...)

reminds me too a bit of Virginia Woolf's short story, "Lappin & Lappinova"- about a newly wed couple who tell themselves stories about being a king hare and queen rabbit, and at the end run off as bunnies.

It's interesting that in times of real world stress like this, we turn to alt world-building narratives. I too turn to SciFi or world-building fantasy, or sometimes horror, or say Trollope. Hmmmm...

it was quite good--esp on grief
