La Rosalía in her LUX era. Already a classic. Quina meravella.

Happy Claude Rains day to those who celebrate. #Noirvember

A little compilation of some of my favorite film noir actors also born during the month of #Noirvember. It's no coincidence. To all fellow noiristas and classic film enthusiasts, this is truly the best season!

In 1945, critics went ballistic against Lauren Bacall for her misfire in CONFIDENTIAL AGENT. This was just a year after her big breakthrough role in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. June 1946, Photoplay published this article in an attempt to pave the way for a more favorable reception of THE BIG SLEEP.

It’s Scorpio season, so you know I’m bringing this iconic Hitchcockian wink from ROPE (1948) back.

My first review for The Arts Desk is live! LE QUAI DES BRUMES (Port of Shadows, 1938) in its new 4K restoration offered a fascinating dive into French poetic realism. It's a film I've long admired. So excited to share with fellow film enthusiasts.

"We know that in the history of all arts, the arrival of absolute realism coincided with perfect decadence.

I wonder if our technical advances don't simply herald complete decadence. Technical perfection can only create boredom, because it only reproduces nature."

– Jean Renoir

Another favorite of Diane Keaton’s more recent films is MORNING GLORY (2010). She’s not in it as much as I’d like her to be, but it gave us a wonderful old-style banter with Harrison Ford. Love it.

The primary source of my love for Diane Keaton comes from BABY BOOM (1987). As the daughter of a single mum, its final scene always gets me. She starred in more iconic films, but her J.C. Wiatt will always be my favorite. For her incredible work and presence, I'm so grateful, and heartbroken today.

Sad to hear of Pat Crowley’s passing. For fellow melodrama fans, I recommend Sirk’s THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW (1956), which I covered on my channel. A sharp look at the cracks in the “happy family,” with Crowley giving one of my favorite performances in the film.

He will, and should, be remembered for so many contributions. In a little corner of my mind, I’ll always see him tapping and singing, bare-chested, along to Singin’ in the Rain, just like he did in Ivan Reitman's LEGAL EAGLES (1986). Thank you for everything, Mr. Redford.

I wrote about Olivia de Havilland, her early career and the nature of Max Reinhardt's DANTON screen test. #BOTD #DameOlivia

In honor of Olivia de Havilland's birthday, it's time to bring back this clip of a screen test for Max Reinhardt's project DANTON (1936).

Although the film never got made, Olivia was given was given the 35 mm nitrate screen test and she donated it to the Academy, who preserved it in 2012. #BOTD

The hardcover of “The Sense and Sensibility Screenplay and Diaries” by Emma Thompson finally arrived! Despite loving the film for many years, until a few months ago, I didn’t know this book existed. So glad I found it.

Quelle belle surprise. Don't sleep on JANE AUSTEN WRECKED MY LIFE (Jane Austen a gâché ma vie, 2025). Not wild about its title, though it caught my eye, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story and its heroine, who reminded me of Frances O’Connor in Patricia Rozema’s underrated Mansfield Park (2000).

I turned a year older this week. Thought I’d mark it with a flashback to when life was mostly cake, joy, and curiosity, things I try to bring into everything I create. I hope some of that makes its way to you.

And yes, I'm still clapping for the cake. Some things never change, others have. A lot.

Ang Lee’s turning point for taking on SENSE AND SENSIBILITY?
Marianne running into the rain, desolate. “It’s not so much her love for Willoughby that’s broken, but her romantic spirit. Her sensibility overflows almost to destruction”, said Lee.

Colonel Brandon once brought Marianne sheet music. I bring you a new post in honour of Jane Austen’s 250th. I look into SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (1995), its revealing DVD commentaries, its unexpected links to old Hollywood and more!
