Surprisingly poor protection against extreme precipitation and flooding events from gray infrastructure in high-income countries and cities.

Nature-based solutions (i.e., green infrastructure) are key!

Topography in cities is helpful

Study shows that excess mortality (more than 3y after a storm) from 500 USA tropical cyclones (TCs) — hurricanes and tropical storms — is higher (7,000–11,000 per TC) than immediate deaths (~24).

4. High concentrations of non-permitted and unregulated poultry CAFOs overlap with socially vulnerable areas in NC and the Southeast US.
December 18, 2024 at 2:29 PM
3. We developed a revised, US-wide dataset of non-permitted and unregulated poultry CAFOs, leveraging AI algorithms and insights from the literature.
December 18, 2024 at 2:29 PM
2. Most poultry CAFOs generate dry waste and operate without federal permits.
📍 North Carolina (NC) is a major poultry producer.

Key Highlights:

1. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) spread massive amounts of untreated waste on nearby farmlands, leading to severe environmental health impacts

Check out our new study in PLOS ONE, ch 2 of my PhD student, Varun Tiwari.

In ch 1, we mapped boro #rice extent in Bangladesh: doi.org/10.1016/j.je...

For his ch 2, we used 20 yrs of satellite data & machine learning to estimate boro #rice yields and trends
