Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas both do things that Fallout 3 does but better, NV does the RPG stuff better and F4 does the exploration better

if it makes you feel any better "long pole" is basically it's own weapon and it's one of the oldest ever (regardless of what you attach to the top)

Maybe poleaxe? But I think that might be completely different. Generally you can distinguish between axe as a weapon or as a tool (woodaxe)
