Michel-Rolph Trouillot wrote about this (book is called “Silencing the Past,” chapter 4 “Good Day, Columbus”) — it’s complicated but in the US a lot of it has to do with Irish and Italian catholics trying to assimilate in the late 1800s

knowing a bunch of words is key when it comes to saying stuff

we need to make this sexual act taboo! that way no one will want to do it!

yeah it’s good! I saw it at the Milwaukee film fest last month. It’s kind of a crowd-pleaser, weirdly, but still very much his style. Starts off very slow and deliberate, then takes a big swerve midway through. I’d love to hear what he has to say about it!

The Shrouds is like this — literally about grief but obliquely about “the present moment” without ever mentioning Trump, covid, etc

I always appreciate Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits for being beautifully composed and performed and also extremely stupid

Ergo the cat who is smelly is the cat who cannot help but inquire, who yearns to understand, and above all else to understand you. QED “Smelly Cat” is a love song
November 14, 2024 at 3:42 AM
And since eating, to the cat, means “getting fed,” she of course applies that frame of reference to you as well, and makes the reasonable assumption that if you have eaten, then “they” must have been “feeding you” too
November 14, 2024 at 3:40 AM
“What are they feeding you” is not a question posed to the cat. It is the question the cat poses to you. Because she wants to smell your mouth, she needs to know what you’ve been eating, she’s just gotta know what that smell is

Ahh yes of course, *objective* data on health outcomes, why didn’t we think of that before! Now I’ll take a big sip of my coffee while I look up “objective and universally agreed upon criteria for measuring health, including the mental kind that’s all about feelings and sense of self”

Oh no complaints from me, I didn’t mean differing framing as a bad thing. I completely agree re: disability studies

That should be “Gill-Peterson,” sorry
April 18, 2024 at 7:24 PM
Jules Gil-Peterson just wrote a great essay speaking to all this, with slightly different framing but I think extremely relevant to this discussion

personally prefer “queer and trans people,” with “queer” standing in for any non-normative sexuality and “trans” standing in for any non-normative gender
March 14, 2024 at 9:28 PM
I wish I had worked out a more readable style, at least for the introduction, and I wish I hadn’t made trans medicine one word (don’t remember why I did that, makes me cringe now), but I stand by my argument, esp. re: rhetorical risk and the necessity of claiming our own beauty

In case anyone is listening, this was what I wrote last time. Maybe worth following up, or maybe it’s better to preserve semi-anonymity here and delete this post, idk, we’ll see I guess

I understood why people were upset at the NYT piece, but the response to this one makes no sense to me. Personally pretty disheartening to see trans people reject someone trying to think deeply about the politics of our personhood, since that is what I’m trying to do as well

Well, I had gotten my thoughts together, realized I needed to write something longer than a thread to articulate them, and then saw how much flak Chu is getting, and now I just feel insane
