Of course, even that smaller figure could be reduced - saving a lot of stress for children and families as well as money for councils - if we invested anywhere near enough in local special education and a more inclusive mainstream to begin with!

Of that headline figure, just 180,000 are eligible for home-to-school transport due to SEND - and only 9% of those (~2500 total) receive single-occupancy transport. Far more are eligible due to walking distance.
