People trying to rationalize their opposition to it is just pathetic to read. It's the factually correct argument. I am opposed to it because I enjoy driving and breaking the speed limit and I do it basically every time I am on the road, but I am not going to pretend my disagreement is rational.

I wonder if the Top Gear appearance(s) actually ended up helping or harming the sales in the long run 🤔
December 8, 2025 at 2:18 PM
Same. For me, if I have to go 3rd party, I never bother with the storefronts and just go straight to eBay. I've had better luck with sellers there, where I can deal with the seller (more) directly and with more robust mechanisms for addressing issues.
October 6, 2025 at 1:52 AM
Yeah, but at that stage (if it's sold and shipped by 3rd party) it feels like you're just doing eBay with extra steps and worse mechanisms for recourse.
October 6, 2025 at 1:48 AM
There really ought to be an option to sort by seller (I could have sworn there was one at one point). I know why Amazon doesn't want buyers to have that option, but BestBuy and Walmart both have it and thanks to it I never even see any items from third party sellers when I shop there, it's great.
October 6, 2025 at 1:43 AM
Never had issues with first and second types - buying and refunding is pretty straightforward and reliable and for the third type of items it's hit or miss and you might as well buy from eBay at that stage.
October 6, 2025 at 1:39 AM
Do they? Maybe I'm not getting the complexity, but I always thought that the only two things that matter here is who it is sold by and where does it ship from. Either sold AND shipped by Amazon (OK), sold by third party and shipped by Amazon (less ideal), sold and shipped by third party (BAD).
October 6, 2025 at 1:37 AM
I buy maybe ~50 items a year from those three storefronts alone, and the instance I see an item that is not a book and is sold by a third-party seller the likelihood of me buying it drops to near zero. But in almost every case I can get equivalent items from the storefront itself no problem.
October 6, 2025 at 1:17 AM
I never understood why people buy so much from third-party sellers on places like Amazon, Walmart or BestBuy. I get it with things that are out of print and are only sold by specialty retailers, but for humdrum daily items the storefront itself will stock and sell 99% of the same items.

Russians are the single largest ethnic minority, but apart from ethnic Kazakhs and Russians, about 14% of the population are other minorities.

Kazakhstanis refers to all citizens of Kazakhstan regardless of their ethnicity. Not all Kazakhstanis are Kazakhs, not all Kazakhs are Kazakhstanis. The government itself insists on using it in most cases. They only really use "Kazakh", singular, as an adjective.

And, perhaps as importantly, they were much more likely to be petty bourgeoisie with small businesses as opposed to working class like your average Wehrmacht grunt.

It should be pointed out that research by German historians shows that Browning's premise was a bit flawed as they were less ordinary than portrayed in the sense that they were volunteers, were picked based on ideological criteria, and, as part of the SS, received heavy doses of Nazi indoctrination

They kinda do I think. At least in Civ 6 you can use certain naval units to explore coastal tribal villages by using pillage commands on them.

Longer to do what, in their opinion??? Allies ran into huge logistical issues precisely because they didn't expect to have as many troops as far into France as they had. Original plans drawn up before the landings didn't anticipate the Allies even reaching the German border until May 1945!

Say what you want, but at least IF it was like Gotham City (which it isn't) there might actually have been better public transit. From what we've seen the subway system is huge!
May 30, 2025 at 2:03 AM
That's fair. I think ultimately there are so many issues with driving standards, culture, infrastructure, and vehicles in NA that any one of them can theoretically be substantially improved through relatively simple measures, but systematically I'm kinda pessimistic. No reason not to try tho.

I think your data and mine are more in agreement on speeding in Finland. Your link doesn't give the actual percentage for speeding that I could find, but says that speeding above 10kph over is ~10-12%. Probably a lot (most?) Finns do habitually break speed limits, but by less than 10kph.

~29% of fatal accidents in the US had speeding as a contributing factor
www.nhtsa.gov/risky-drivin...

Speeding is definitely going to be a problem, but I think that on average (northern North) American drivers are so poorly trained and tested that they are going to drive unsafely even at low speed.

Finns actually do MORE speeding than motorists in most other countries (or at least they're more honest about their speeding). Something like 3 in 4 Finnish drivers admit to speeding, but they still have fewer accidents in part because they also get more training.

The point is about safer streets. Going slowly only helps so much when the drivers are bad enough that speeding is only a factor in less than a third of fatal accidents in the US. Forcing real driving training and testing would make a huge difference, whereas now anyone with pulse can get a license
May 28, 2025 at 2:26 PM
One of the reasons it works in Finland and might not work here is that they are better drivers - it's FAR more difficult to get a driver's license in Finland. It's easier now (used to be you had to be tested on a skid pad and driving in the dark), but still the pass rate for first timers is ~50%.

I wouldn't be so sure about that one to be honest, 1996 was a banger year for games. Plus, if you account for sales and subscriptions that help drive down the costs of games today we also have to account for the endemic PIRACY that was prevalent in the 90s. Plus rentals.
