That's an awful thing to go through, on both counts there. It's clear that those experiences shaped you into being a person who *wants* to be open and understand others, which is a great thing! I also try to learn and understand where others come from. 😁

Currently I am considered "White", but go back to when my grandparents immigrated from south Europe in the 50s they were not within the envelope of Whiteness but were "ethnic". My grandma had dogs sicced on her, the family called DPs (implying they were from a displaced persons camp) and other slurs

It could be that they are used to getting the question in a way that implies they aren't a "real" American. Everyone's lived experiences are different. My partner is born in Canada and visibly East Asian, he has told me how often he gets asked "But what are you really?" by literally random people

Some dislike the question because it tends to be disproportionately asked to non-white people and usually there is a connotation (even if not intended) of "But where are you *really* from?"

I'm sure you never meant it in that way, of course! Just that is the result of some people's lived experience
