And we as a human society have to grapple with what it means to be a human in a real way. What does it mean to think, create, and learn with a tool like AI? All of this has to be negotiated and thought about.

And even with cars or any new tech there were ethical considerations that developed for the safety of those devices. We implemented seatbelt laws, DUI, Age restrictions, licenses, etc. I think there should be regulations that guide the ethical use of the technology and what it is used for.

So what happens when the machine give answers that are not correct and nobody questions it? Or people use it so much it not even people talking to each other just their AI communicating a script? The AI only communicating with AI?

It’s all fun and games until she tries to build a bridge. Or tries to become a doctor. Or a lawyer. Or anything that takes critical thinking. People are complaining about learned helplessness now? Wait until all “knowledge” is contained in a box that you give your thinking to.

A good example is one of my students used Chat GPT on her paper on English. She put in the prompt but she was unable to understand the nuances of what she was arguing about. She understood nothing of why her analysis was flawed. Or why she even needed it.

I am not a Luddite. I understand technology changes and augments society. AI can be a wonderful assistant in many ways for redundant tasks, data analysis, medical surveys, treatment, but if people cannot understand why the answer could be right or wrong then it defeats the point.

So how do you know what is true? Just take the god in the machine’s word for it? As someone who is a teacher who deals with AI both as the push for it becomes overwhelming and as students are using it the problem comes in when no one questions the results or understand why the result happened.

Don’t give up. Many authors had middling to horrible sells before a breakthrough. And you sometimes just want to see a story play out even if nobody else digs it.
