You can then format just one of the story files (like the paragraph or character styles) and then just update the other stories when the book registers a change has been made and saved.

Yes, it's super easy to use a book. Open ID and under File, go to New and Book. Name it and save it in the folder with your story files. You'll see the Book palette appear and just click on the plus sign (+) to add your stories into it.
