Central Park I awoke in a grassy oasis, surrounded by glass figurines. Parched, I clawed a path toward greener thistles, until I reached a motionless pool, where I scooped a mirror with filthy hands. There, I drank. My shredded jeans were afloat in the silt as I washed the sweat from my knees and reveled in the cold whisper against my sun-crisped skin. I became aware of the harsh uneven canter of my heart, like a frightened housecat pulling a sled, and I marvelled at its capacity to rush. Shhh, I tell it now. You've got your whole life, child. Quiet and let me drink a moment. High up in the glass figurines, thousands of children rush like blood, chasing some grassy oasis. Milo Brown

How Could You hold this loss in your chest box it with packing tape emboss it with sharpie fumes How could you leave the carpet stained with your blood and sweat betray the room that bore you through its lips onto this dagger world put your rough hands on my wheel your covered feet on my gas pedal How could you drive away without both eyes on your rearview mirror you left to become someone I couldn't recognize How could you wear my dimpled face and call it your reflection when you dressed me up in cardboard; and ended this poem. Pink The vernal night breeze carries a sweet lullaby Blushing apple blossoms asleep in each tree Precious pink ladies in their infancy Will stretch and yawn at the advent of dawn and her rosy fingers tickle the flowers awake and she greets them with a mouthful of robinsong The giggling blossoms will tumble from their cradle and the springtime will follow them all the way down Milo Brown

You close your fist around the feathers of a shifting day but the purple dusk nests below the clouds whether you crushed that hummingbird heartbeat of sky or whether you let it race as if we can choose to let go of a moment already hatched Eggs never stay they shatter in your palm or break like a heart becoming Little birds, crying let me go To the rivers with fish on their tongues Let me go To the plum-peeled mountains that watch Let me go To the buzz of the hummingbird sky Let me go to a heart that has never known borders between this lifetime and the next Your hand is my hand I hold because you hold Because we hold us back

I wish I could say that most of my poems end up in the trash Because my mama taught me not to litter But I am bleeding paper dreams Same as you Scrawling fears on empty wrappers Same as you Tossing words into the sky Heedless of their impact on the Earth I wish I could say that I listen more than I speak Because my poems spill when I listen to the world and to myself But I can’t help wondering if I’m only talking at you and to myself Paper planes were not built to be caught And I am not proud of anything I’ve done And I am not ashamed of anything I’ve felt And I will speak when you are not listening And I will listen when you cannot speak And every poem I dispose of will quietly find its way back to the humble ground And to myself Same as you Same as me
