But don't get me wrong, any near term colonization or space born economic activity should be near earth for mere practicality. Any farther is just too expensive.

I disagree. You'd have gravity. Not a lot, but probably better than nothing. And the planet itself is a source of raw materials. And you can build underground for radiation shielding.
The distance to earth is definitely worse though. It's not great, at all, but there are pros to Mars over a station

I guess if Mars colonization happens it will be kinda the opposite of North America, in that it will have to be self sufficient right away but will almost certainly never become a money making endeavor.
