Most urban Cairenes have never seen any of their country that is off of a paved road. How many would recognise these phots from only a few km south of Cairo? There is an entire other country out there among the farms.
A group of friends decided to take some of our horses out into the dirt roads behind Al Sorat Farm in Giza near the pyramids of Abu Sir. Most people in Egypt ride horses in clubs or in the desert, but ours have been trained to provide safe, sane riding in the farm roads where they might encounter anything from a bicycle to a bulldozer, from a goose to a water buffalo. It involves special training but the experience is very special. One of the pyramids of Abu Sir is visible just to the right of the tall tree. Long fields of berseem clover are being grown for forage for farm animals, and the Sahara starts just at the end of the fields. The pink flowers are a variety of bush morning glory that is grown during the summer for shade, and cut in winter for fuel for a quick cup of tea in the cold. An intelligent steady horse is vital in an area where almost anything could come along the dirt track. The shelter is for the cattle or water buffalo who walk out from the space behind a farmer's home to the fields. The manure collected here and near the home will be used for compost to refresh the soil when it is plowed into the ground before the next planting. One of the staff of Al Sorat Farm leads the group and is familiar with the ecological and social issues for the farm families. Homes in the area vary from the smaller farmer's places to some very grand weekend homes for urban families, although many people are moving out from the city for the clean air and quiet. In this area every home pays a 50 LE fee on their electric bill for trash collection, but somehow no one seems to be responsible for actually collecting it. In stead most of the collection is in the hands of recyclers.

I've lived in Egypt for over 35 years but started exploring the farmlands in the last 25. Even Egyptians never see the part of their country that is off an asphalt road. We offer visitors to the farm rides with our horses to explore their land.
A woman in a black cloak and scarf is pumping water from a red handpump for her black donkey next to a brick wall. In many villages, this is the main source of water for household use. A pair of adult water buffalo walk side by side along a canal on the way to the farmer's land. The buffalo know exactly where they are and where they are going. The pinkish one on the left is younger than the dark grey one on the right. Buffalo are born a pale pink and gradually turn almost black with exposure to sunlight. Horses like this one and donkeys were the primary means of transport until recently. Now many families have a motocycle or a three-wheeled pickup truck. But the horses and donkeys could take you home with more safety than a Tesla. An empty corner lot provides a space for a family garden. With the temperatures rising, the trees shading the garden edge are important because the summer sun can burn most plants to nothing, and also they provide fruit. There is a fig tree here, some lemon trees and other citrus. The large greyish leaves are probably cauliflower.

My farm, Al Sorat Farm, in Giza provides outpatient care for farm animals near us. Weekly we visit farmers nearby to treat their creatures. These were near Abu Sir. We travel with a tuktuk and a donkey cart.
Young water buffalo have beautiful ears like deer or like butterflies. Rural Egyptian life is mainly lived out of doors on a mat next to a colourful wall to lean on. An older woman sits with a younger woman and her baby. Men may be coming for tea. Shelter for animals is more to escape the heat than the cold or rain. A goat is watching over three black and white cows. Egyptian farmers have always loved cats. They live out of doors as well and hunt the rats and mice. This white and beige cat almost blends with the sand.

Weekly we take a large donkey cart to a site to treat outpatient cases for free, dispensing parasite control, advising care for any animal from a baby chicken to a camel under a veterinarian's supervision. Healthy animals make for healthier farmers.
A crowd of Egyptian villagers and their children and livestock gathered around a wooden wagon with plastic boxes containing veterinary medications. This was during covid but very few people in our area got sick because they were living and working out of doors most of the time. We handed out masks, but they tended to save them for a trip into town.

I live in rural Giza and our staff work every day to care to help the local farmers care for their animals. Al Sorat Farm & Rural Wellness Initiative Egypt
There aren't any paved roads in the Egyptian countryside. Children are gathered around some men who are trimming the feet of a horse and putting a net mask on a donkey's head to protect it from flies.
