🇨🇦🇺🇸 Great, quick interview with Vancouver's transit honcho, who relocated there from Baltimore — highlights just HOW DIFFERENT the transit culture is in Canada, compared to the US.

The métro, bus and bikeshare system is operated by Keolis, under contract with the Rennes metropolitan government. The transit improvements have been accompanied by changes to streets in the historic core to accommodate more pedestrians and bikes, and reduce reliance on cars in the city center.

The underground stations in the city center are well-designed: like the system itself, they are on the small side. The new, modern stations for Line B, in particular, feel quite airy despite their small size. Having frequent automated trains means any crowds can get cleared out quickly.

Onboard, the Rennes métro offers large windows, which bring in sunlight on the elevated sections away from the historic city center. Elevated structures have a graceful design that makes pedestrian crossings beneath far more open and pleasant than highway crossings with similar carrying capacities.

Much like the city itself, the Rennes métro is small. You might think of it as a citywide airport people-mover system. Its rubber-tired trains are automated and arrive every few minutes; stations are short and have platform doors.

Welcome to Rennes, metro area of 750,000 and regional capital of Brittany in western France. From Paris it's 1h30 by high-speed train or 3h30 by car.

In 2002 the city opened its first metro line, making it the world's smallest city with a subway. Now it covers 15 miles with 2 lines and 28 stations.
