Los Angeles Board of Supervisors new policy limits commissions that oversee the Sheriffs Department from communicating with the press *AND DIRECTLY WITH THE BOARD* (at least as far as I can make out). Another significant blow for transparent oversight.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE POLICY COMMISSION AND OVERSIGHT BODY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TITLE: COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL STANDARD OPERATING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES A. Purpose This Standard Operating Policy and Procedure (SOPP) establishes a unified communications protocol to ensure alignment with the Board of Supervisors’s (BOS) requirements, professional engagement with the media, and consistent social media governance. It supports the Executive Office’s shared services model and facilitates effective messaging from County commissions and oversight bodies. The Public Information Office of the Executive Office (EO-PIO) is uniquely positioned to facilitate these goals given its Countywide perspective, close relationship with the Board of Supervisors, and understanding of how external communications can impact County operations, policy priorities, and public perception. Establishing central communication coordination for all County commissions and oversight bodies through the EO-PIO helps: • Protect and strengthen relationships with the BOS, their deputies, and County departments. • Ensure messaging alignment and avoid conflicting or duplicative communications. • Leverage the EO-PIO’s ability to secure BOS quotes and endorsements, navigate County protocols, and offer strategic guidance on media and public engagement. • Provide expert review and editorial support to elevate the professionalism and impact of communications. B. Scope This SOPP applies to all County commissions and oversight bodies supported by the Executive Office and governs: 1. Approval process for communications 2. Communications with the Board of Supervisors 3. Communications with the media 4. Crisis communications 5. Social media content and management This SOPP applies to all communications directed to the Board of Supervisors, reporters, and social media platforms. C.
