The difference is that the Russians bite off more than they could chew at the outset of the war.
Now they are taking it slower due to Ukrainian resistance. Wars of attrition are won by those with more men and industrial capacity, I can’t see Ukraine being able to launch a significant offensive again

I believe Pokrovsk is a gateway to future operations as this war shows no sign of ending in the next two or so years.
